The Handlebar Club was founded in Great Britain in the lat 1940s by actor Jimmy Edwards, of the Windmill Theatre. Initially joining Mr. Edwards were Frank Muir, of the BBC, and the Baron de Bere. Many founding members were ex- or serving members of the British armed forces, especially the R.A.F., to whom the anachronistic masculinity appealed.
Little information about the Club still survives, and most of what does is mainly conjecture and supposition. Still, one authentic photograph is still with us courtesy of LIFE Magazine:
